Contract Document Properties

Document properties include settings that affect the entire document. Use the Numbering, Header, and Footer tabs to control the format for autonumbered clauses, headers, and footers.

Numbering Tab

Contracts frequently have multi-level numbering for clauses. You can set the style for each level individually:  Roman Numerals for Level one, lowercase letters for level 2, etc.


The numbering tab lists nine levels and shows their current formatting selections.

»To change formatting for a level

    1. Select the level you want to edit in the list.
    2. Enter information in the following fields:
    1. Click OK to save the numbering formats and return to the Document Template Editor. You can use the Preview in Word feature to view how your current document will look with the selected number formatting.

Header & Footer Tabs        

Header and footer text appears at the top/bottom of pages in the contract document. Headers and Footers are composed of 3 sections or areas that are separately edited and formatted: Left, Center, and Right. Each section can be individually formatted. In this example, all three areas are used:

Some fields are provided so you can enter standard information such as file name, page number or date into any area of the header or footer.

»To create headers/footers

    1. Select the Header or Footer tab and type text into the areas you want to populate or if you want to insert one of the standard field, click in the text box for the area where you want the field to display, click the Insert button, and choose a field from the dropdown menu. A field placeholder will appear in the text box.
    2. Use the Bold, Italics and Underscore buttons in each area to format the text.
    3. Spell check each text box individually by clicking the spell check button.
    4. If you do not want the header/footer to display on the first page of the contract, select the "Suppress header on first page" option.
    5. Click OK to save the headers and footers and return to the Document Template Editor. You can use the Preview in Word feature to see how your current document will look with the headers and footers you selected.
