Working with Sub-Questions

You can organize questions hierarchically by adding subquestions to a question. You can add as many levels of sub-questions as you like. If you have questions and subquestions available in a spreadsheet, you may want to import them directly into a Iasta SmartSource survey. See Importing Questions for more information.

»To add a question

    1. Select and expand a project in the Connections and Projects tree and click the Surveys branch.
    2. Iasta SmartSource shows a list of surveys in the right pane. Click the Edit link under the survey you want to edit to open the Survey Editor.
    3. Select the question where you want to add the sub-question.
    4. Click on the toolbar and select New Sub-Question or right-click and select New Question > New Sub-Question from the shortcut menu. Iasta SmartSource adds a new sub-question to the existing question and opens the question for editing in the right pane of the Survey Editor window.

NOTE: For information about adding and working with table questions, refer to Working with Table Questions or Working with Table Sub-Questions.

    1. Configure the question by entering information in these fields:

NOTE: All question text is double spaced by default. To force single spacing within the question text, hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard at the same time you press ENTER for another line. See Formatting Survey Question Text for more information.

NOTE: You can also allow respondents to attach a file in addition to their answer by selecting "Allow respondents to optionally attach files in response to this question" check box. In this case, the attachment is always optional for the respondent.

NOTE: Use caution when making checklists required. Respondents must check at least one item in the list in order to submit their response. For cases where NO selection is a potentially correct response, you should either make the question optional (do not select this check box) or create a "None of the above" or "Not applicable" option in the checklist so that suppliers can answer the question correctly and still meet the requirement.

»To move a question

You can drag and drop questions around your survey by clicking on a question, keeping the mouse button pressed, moving the mouse to the desired location, and then releasing the mouse button. You can also use the up and down arrow buttons to move questions up and down in the survey tree.

»To copy a question

    1. From the Survey Editor window, select the question you want to copy, right click and select Copy from the shortcut menu.
    2. Select the section where you want to put the question, right click, and select Paste to add the copied question to the end of the section.

»To copy a question from a different survey

    1. Select and expand the project in the Connections and Projects tree.
    2. Select the Surveys node.
    3. Click the Edit link below the survey name in the right pane to open the Survey Editor window.
    4. Select the question you want to copy, right click, and select Copy from the shortcut menu.
    5. Select and expand the destination project in the Connections and Projects tree.
    6. Click the Edit link below the survey name in the right pane to open the Survey Editor window.
    7. Select the section where you want to place the copied question, right click, and select Paste from the shortcut menu. The copied question appears as the last question in the section. Use the arrow buttons to reposition the question in the survey.

»To copy and paste question text from a different application

When you copy and paste text from a different application (such as Excel or Word) into a survey question, hidden characters and formatting codes can affect how the text displays. When pasting text into a question box, use Ctrl-V or the "Paste Text Only" option on the shortcut menu to strip out all hidden characters and formatting codes. To keep hidden characters and formatting codes, press Shift+Ctrl+V, or click the Paste button and select "Paste With Formatting".
